Art exhibition This will be held by the Burry Port Art group at St Ishmael’s church, Ferryside, from July 23 to August 1 between 11am and 4pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Townswomen’s Guild Members met recently for a strawberry cream tea and had a very pleasant afternoon with lots of time for a chat. Sylvia was wished a very happy 90th birthday. The guild will meet for their usual Wednesday luncheons throughout the summer but the next normal monthly meeting will be in September when the speaker will be Mair Passmore who will demonstrate the art of sugarcraft.

Coffee bingo evening On Monday, July 19, there is a coffee and bingo evening at the Royal British Legion headquarters. Cost 40p to include coffee and biscuits. Last bingo books 8.20pm.

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides The last few weeks have been very eventful for Burry Port Rainbows, Brownies and Guides who joined with other Carmarthenshire groups celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. The Rainbows held a fun day at Penclacwydd with pond dipping, willow weaving and many other activities. The Guides held a cook-in on the Pembrey Racing Circuit in an effort to find an unusual place to cook and the Brownies took over Kidwelly Castle, where they enjoyed weaving, maypole dancing and a wonderful re-enactment of the story of Merlin and King Arthur. They also joined with Pembrey Brownies in a service of dedication at the Memorial Park gardens and many thanks are extended to the town council for helping to mark the centenary in such a colourful way.

Cefn Sidan Rotary The presidential handover dinner was held at the Ashburnham Hotel on Tuesday, June 29.

Outgoing president Roger Rees welcomed president Melanie Carroll Cliff and president elect Graham Williams of the Rotary Club of Llanelli, and honorary Rotarians Bishop Mullins; founder member Edward James and former member Godfrey Rees and his wife Sally, together with the Rotarians and their partners and guests. President Roger handed his chain of office over to president elect Bryan Digby, who then took the chair of office and inducted the following officers: president-elect Roger Morley-Jones; president nominee Peter Hamilton; secretary Mark Stephens; treasurer Huw Morse and Sergeant at Arms Jeff Harry. Committee chairmen are Rev Geraint Davies, Peter Roberts, James Akeroyd, Brian Beynon and Alun Williams. President Bryan Digby chaired his first meeting on July 6, which began with a minute’s silence, to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of past president and former treasurer Gwyn Thomas, of Mynyddygarreg. The meeting was a fellowship evening, and as such an informal one, with three projects being discussed. Rotarian James Akeroyd, chairman of the International Service Committee outlined the proposal to support a project in India, which is striving to secure the purchase of a minibus to service a school of 60 blind children. The Thanks for Life project, which is Rotary’s world wide initiative to eradicate Polio, is to be supported by the national campaign to plant crocus corms in the form of the Rotary wheel emblem. The club is to receive the corms in the autumn, for planting to flower in the spring of 2011
